Paintings & Sculpture at the National Academy of Design
Vol. 1: 1826-1925
David B Dearinger
The National Academy of Design is one of the oldest art organizations in the United States. This long-awaited first installment of a fully illustrated and documented two-volume catalogue of its priceless collection contains information on a total of 1,390 objects and biographies of 581 artists. Founded in 1826, the Academy was the brainchild of painter and scientist Samuel F. B. Morse who guided the fulfillment of its mission—the promotion of American art—through annual exhibitions of contemporary American art, a school of fine arts, and a membership of professional artists. The process of accomplishing these goals led to the formation of one of the largest and most important collections of American art in the world. Because it is the membership who review and accept or reject submissions, the collection evolved into a direct and multi-layered reflection of the taste of American artists. The collection is rich in masterworks of the Hudson River School, with canvases by Frederic Edwin Church and Sanford Robinson Gifford; portraits of artists including Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Cecilia Beaux; late nineteenth-century American sculpture with bronzes by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, and Anna Hyatt Huntington; and paintings by such American Impressionists and Tonalists as George Inness, Childe Hassam, and William Merritt Chase.
