The Hall of Mirrors
History and Restoration
Christine Albanel, Pierre Arizzoli-Clémentel, Pierre Coppey Translation by Anne Sautier-Greening The first publication solely dedicated to the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles and its recent comprehensive restoration campaign. Provides deep insight into the seventeenth century building and painting techniques used to create this magnificent set of galleries. Offers over 700 color plates.
Essential for collectors and historians of seventeenth century France. Built by architect Jules-Hardouin Mansart between 1678 and 1684, for King Louis XIV of France, the Hall of Mirrors was named after the 357 mirrored panels in its 17 different arcades. Known as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO, a major restoration campaign was undertaken from 2004 until 2007 to bring this masterpiece of the Grand Siècle and the paintings of Le Brun back to their original character. With over 700 color plates in this publication, the many paintings of the Hall are shown in great detail—including those scarcely visible from the ground below. This catalogue allows for a thorough examination of the exceptional décor, the history behind the Hall's creation and the iconography that carries throughout Le Brun's various painted scenes. With contributions by more than 35 scholars—art historians, architects, and conservators who followed the process—the collective result is an opportunity to study this iconic space as never before
