Frederick Hart
Changing Tides

Frederick Turner, Michael Novak

The work of Frederick Hart is changing the world of art.
michael novak

Frederick Hart’s sculpture is at once traditional in its adherence to the importance of the human figure, and radical in its sensuality and innovative use of materials. This new and richly illustrated publication is a comprehensive look into the life and talent of a classical sculptor, whose passion for the spiritual and figurative aspects of his craft is represented in both his public commissions and private work. Daughters of Odessa, one of Hart’s masterworks, is traced from its first inspiration to the final bronze; The Creation Sculptures, which grace the west facade of Washington National Cathedral, are explored in an in-depth analysis of his epic interpretation, and the Three Soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington, D.C. are brought to life through the artist’s writings. Additionally, new works are comprehensively presented, building on the previous book Frederick Hart, Sculptor (1994), now in its fifth printing.

Frederick Turner, Founders Professor of Arts and Humanities at the University of Texas, Dallas, is a prize-winning poet, literary critic, interdisciplinary philosopher, essayist, translator, cultural critic, former editor of The Kenyon Review, and author of twenty-five books.

Michael Novak, theologian, author, and former U. S. Ambassador, currently holds the George Frederick Jewett Chair in Religion and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. He is the 1994 recipient of the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion.
