Nature Transformed
Wood Art from the Bohlen Collection

Sean M. Ulmer, Janice Blackburn and Terry Martin

Artists working in wood are creating some of the most compelling contemporary art to be found in any medium. And nowhere is the vision, audacity, technical mastery, and sophistication of contemporary wood art better represented than in the collection of Robert Bohlen and Lillian Montalto Bohlen.

Using a variety of carving, turning, and finishing techniques on woods ranging from the commonplace to the exotic, the artists represented in Nature Transformed have created works that amuse, astonish, and inspire. Essays and interviews explore the evolution of wood art and offer a comprehensive look at a unique contemporary art form at a vital moment in its evolution.

Janice Blackburn is curator of contemporary art at Sotheby’s London, a former assistant curator at the Saatchi Collection, and current contributing editor to Arts Review. David Revere McFadden is Chief Curator and Vice President for Programs and Collections at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and the author of more than seventy books, reviews, and articles. Terry Martin has served as editor-in-chief of the woodturning journal Turning Points and has published extensively on the art of woodturning. Sean Ulmer is University Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.
