Olbinski Posters For Performing Arts
Richard Wilde
Poetic humor is a quality rarely found in the fine arts. Rafal Olbinski has this gift. He shifts lines with spirit, and invents humorous and piquant situations that become graphic compositions which surprise our eyes. He wants to show us that our imagination is a magical world which is capable of recreating forever.

The first full-scale publication to celebrate Rafal Olbinski and his exceptional ability to depict the world of performing arts and entertainment, Olbinski: Posters for Performing Arts features jazz posters for European Jazz festivals from the late 1970s to a series of dramatically illustrated designs from the 1980s and 1990s for the premiere opera, circus, and theater companies of Europe and America. Combining painting, illustration, graphic design, typography, and stage design with a signature, almost surrealistic style described as “sharp, clean, and dead-on-the-mark,” Olbinski’s art captures “in a single image the entire sweep of a masterwork’s complexities” while managing to convey its piercing historical, emotional, and cultural significance. Sometimes startling, always intriguing, Olbinski’s posters dare the viewer to explore beyond the surface. Richard Wilde is the chairman of the Advertising and Graphic Design department at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He is a lecturer and author of Problems: Solutions and Visual Literacy.
