Halima Taha, Allan L. Edmunds, Bernard Young, et al.
Brandywine pursues a central goal of reaching out to young and emerging artists of all backgrounds and to afford opportunities to older ethnic artists.
Allan Edmunds
For more than thirty years the Brandywine Workshop has served the important function of inspiring artists and students of varied backgrounds and races to produce innovative collaborations in printmaking. Founded in Philadelphia in 1972 by master printer Allan Edmunds, the Workshop has since hosted more than 250 artists, producing over 600 images and 20,000 individual prints for its prized limited editions. Along the way it has bridged important geographic and cultural boundaries through teaching and art, bringing together masters and apprentices to focus on a medium known for its expressive potential and broad accessibility. Drawn from Brandywine’s extensive archives, Three Decades of American Printmaking presents one hundred forty-seven color and black-and-white photographs, highlighting works by such influential artists as Eugene Grigsby Jr., Sam Gillium, John E. Dowell Jr., Kenneth Nolan, Louis Delsarte, and Romare Bearden. Extensive information on the Workshop’s exhibitions, collections, and artists, sheds new light on an institution dedicated to enhancing the role of culturally diverse artists though the medium of prints. Halima Taha, Ph.D. is a noted author, independent curator, art consultant, and educator.
