Flowers, Dragons, & Pine Trees
Asian Textiles in the Spencer Museum of Art

Mary M. Dusenbury

This beautifully illustrated volume introduces a little-known but outstanding collection of Asian textiles in the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. Focusing on ninety-five textiles from the Indian subcontinent, Iran, China, and Japan, the book employs a wide variety of source materials including archeological reports, 19th–century travelers’ journals, maps, trade documents, literature and paintings, to place each textile in a resonant context.

A series of essays gives historical background and examines interconnections between local tradition and trade, the role of the court or government in textile production, the use of textiles to designate rank, status, and power, the role of textiles in religious practice, and links between fashion, technology, and production. These issues, while rising directly from the Spencer Museum collection, have relevance well beyond this specific group of textiles.

Flowers, Dragons, & Pine Trees is written for both the specialist and a general audience. It places fresh research within a comprehensive socio-historic context that includes information about technique, production iconography, function, patronage, and trade. Fully illustrated, this volume includes a glossary, index, and catalogue of the complete collection.

Mary M. Dusenbury received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Kansas, is acting curator of Asian Art at the Spencer Museum of Art, and President of the Textile Society of America.
