American Horizons
The Photographs of Art Sinsbaugh
Keith F Davis
. . . I became aware of the unbelievably infinite detail on the horizon; this is what drew my attention. So I set about to pursue the distant horizon.
art sinsabaugh
Art Sinsabaugh began his formal training at Chicago's legendary Institute of Design, where he studied under such seminal mid-20th-century masters as Arthur Siegel, ans Harry Callahan. Rooted in the school's Bauhaus teachings, Sinsabaugh eventually developed a format and style unique to photography in America. American Horizons includes a generous selection of the artist's images, juxtaposing his classic Midwest prairie views and Chicago cityscapes with an instructive sampling of lesser-known works to offer a full portrayal of his oeuvre. The majority of images are drawn from the Art Sinsabaugh Archive at Indiana University, Bloomington. A scholarly biographical and critical essay by Keith F. Davis, supplemented by extensive materials by and about the artist, fills a long-overdue need to place a photographer known for his regional work in a larger context. American Horizons offers the most complete available treatment of Sinsabaugh's life and career. Photo historian Keith F. Davis is Fine Art Programs Director at Hallmark Cards, Inc. and served as the retrospective's guest curator.
